چکیده

The relative abundance and distribution of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) killer (Orcinus orca) in the Falkland Islands Conservation Zone was investigated by analyses scientific observer records from longline fishing vessels between 2002 2004. Thematic maps were created observed spatial temporal effort whale sightings. These suggested that restricted to northeast zone, whereas present throughout east along 1,000m depth-contour. A likelihood ratio test showed be relatively more abundant north south zone than middle region (p<0.01). Group size is discussed monthly analysis sightings considered. 32.4% stations had but no significant difference found catches with (p=0.8743, t=0.1598, df=25).

Killer whales (Orcinus orca) produce ultrasonic whistles.

This study reports that killer whales, the largest dolphin, produce whistles with the highest fundamental frequencies ever reported in a delphinid. Using wide-band acoustic sampling from both animal-attached (Dtag) and remotely deployed hydrophone arrays, ultrasonic whistles were detected in three Northeast Atlantic populations but not in two Northeast Pacific populations. These results are inc...

Whistle sequences in wild killer whales (Orcinus orca).

Combining different stereotyped vocal signals into specific sequences increases the range of information that can be transferred between individuals. The temporal emission pattern and the behavioral context of vocal sequences have been described in detail for a variety of birds and mammals. Yet, in cetaceans, the study of vocal sequences is just in its infancy. Here, we provide a detailed analy...

Responses of male sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) to killer whale sounds: implications for anti-predator strategies

Interactions between individuals of different cetacean species are often observed in the wild. Killer whales (Orcinus orca) can be potential predators of many other cetaceans, and the interception of their vocalizations by unintended cetacean receivers may trigger anti-predator behavior that could mediate predator-prey interactions. We explored the anti-predator behaviour of five typically-soli...

The significance of respiration timing in the energetics estimates of free-ranging killer whales (Orcinus orca).

Respiration rate has been used as an indicator of metabolic rate and associated cost of transport (COT) of free-ranging cetaceans, discounting potential respiration-by-respiration variation in O2 uptake. To investigate the influence of respiration timing on O2 uptake, we developed a dynamic model of O2 exchange and storage. Individual respiration events were revealed from kinematic data from 10...

Modeling acoustic propagation of airgun array pulses recorded on tagged sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus).

In 2002 and 2003, tagged sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) were experimentally exposed to airgun pulses in the Gulf of Mexico, with the tags providing acoustic recordings at measured ranges and depths. Ray trace and parabolic equation (PE) models provided information about sound propagation paths and accurately predicted time of arrival differences between multipath arrivals. With adequate ...
